Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

Today is our last day in Spoleto. While we’ve been here we’ve visited some amazing places, relaxed and met some very nice people, so it’s very hard to leave. The first historical mention of Spoletium is in 241 BC with the foundation of a colony here. It really is unbelievable how many cathedrals, basilicas, crypts, churches, palaces, and castles there are here. Spoleto, a city of approximately 38,000 has 55 churches alone and there is just so much history. The principal church of Spoleto is The Duomo (Cathedral) of S. Maria Assunta, which began around 1175 and was completed in 1227. The inside is actually quite plain with the exception of the colorful frescoes in the apse and in the small chapels.
